Issues That Can Impact Mental Health

Physical, emotional and environmental issues all factor into one's mental health. Many issues can contribute to challenges with mental health including situational stressors such as loss, relationship conflicts, physical illness, chronic pain, employment struggles and life transitions. In addition to these stressors, some people struggle with issues from childhood that may be linked to unhealthy patterns that sabotage their relationships. All of these issues can be compassionately and safely addressed in the counseling process.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

One of the major anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), may occur soon after a major trauma, or it can be delayed for more than 6 months after the event. When it occurs soon after the trauma, it usually gets better after 3 months. However, some people have a longer-term form of PTSD, which can last for many years.

PTSD can occur at any age and can follow a natural disaster, assault, domestic abuse, or rape. EMDR Therapy is an evidenced based treatment for PTSD. I am a trained EMDR therapist who can help you overcome your symptoms with evidenced based PTSD therapy.

Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is often negatively affected by life changes, such as divorce, aging, and medical problems. Low self-esteem and insecurity are often a fear of negative evaluation - a fear that someone will think badly of you. If you have low self-esteem, this fear will be perpetuated. It is of paramount importance to develop a sense of self worth, to like yourself and acknowledge the many important aspects and qualities you have. By focusing on your strengths, therapy can contribute to an improved sense of self worth and the healing of damaged emotions.

Distorted negative self cognitions are often the leading cause of low self-esteem. They usually begin in early childhood as a result of trauma, negative feedback and shame, and they take root in the unconscious. Over time they distort the person's true identity---a child of God with inherent worth and dignity.

EMDR Therapy has been shown to clear these negative self beliefs. The person naturally moves towards a healthier self identity that now fits---the old identity no longer feels true.

Relationship Intimacy

Therapy can help you improve intimacy by developing strategies to maintain and strengthen the relationship commitments that are important and valued by you. By revitalizing the intimate bond between couples, the overall quality of the relationship and marital satisfaction can be greatly enhanced. Couples therapy helps to meet each couples' needs, whether it's understanding and resolving conflicts, improving the relationship, communicating better, negotiating differences, problem solving, or learning to argue in a healthier way. Sometimes the need is simply finding a way to rejoin after becoming separated within the relationship.

PREPARE-ENRICH Assessment

I will often utilize the PREPARE/ENRICH program because It has a proven track record for identifying the strengths in the relationship as well as identifying areas for on-going growth. It is a wonderful tool for helping the couple build healthy long-lasting relationship skills.

Spiritual Direction

I have a certification in Spiritual Direction which I received in 1998 through the School of Spirituality in Clearwater, Florida.

"When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving much advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a gentle and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares".
